The building has many authentic details and the facade and interior are richly decorated with ornaments. Influences of Berlage, Rationalism, and Art Nouveau can be found in the design. Among others, the later Nobel Prize winner H.A. Lorentz and artist M.C. Escher attended this school. The central staircase was even the inspiration for M.C. Escher's most famous drawings. The building is located on Schoolstraat in the State Protected cityscape of the Spijkerkwartier. This neighborhood is characterized by the presence of many monumental buildings, including the “Brussels houses” located in the adjacent Spijkerstraat. The neighborhood borders the center of Arnhem.
