Choosing an area in Amsterdam is a trade-off between space, commute and living close to the old city.
De Pijp, just south of the canal ring, is a classic first address for young professionals. Expect narrow 19th century apartments with steep stairs and rarely a lift, the Albert Cuypmarkt on your doorstep and metro line 52 at De Pijp station.
Amsterdam-Noord is reached by the free ferries behind Centraal Station or by metro 52. Around Overhoeks and the former NDSM wharf, it is easier to find newer blocks with lifts and balconies.
Amsterdam-Oost mixes pre-war blocks around Oosterpark and the Dappermarkt with IJburg, a newer island district where family living with outdoor space is more common.
Amsterdam real estate agents (makelaars) who work for the landlord may not charge you agency fees, and !WOON gives tenants free advice on contracts. Never transfer a deposit before you have seen the property and signed a contract.
Amsterdam has four main train stations (Centraal, Zuid, Sloterdijk and Amstel), linking you to the rest of the Netherlands, so your area decides your real commute. Travel times come from the Google Routes API. Further out, Haarlemmermeer near Schiphol and Purmerend to the north have direct transit into the city.
Utrecht is about 27 minutes from Amsterdam by public transit (40 km), with frequent intercity trains from Centraal, Amstel and Zuid.
Rotterdam is about 41 minutes from Amsterdam by public transit (70 km), via Schiphol on the high-speed line.
Den Haag is about 44 minutes from Amsterdam by public transit (63 km), with direct trains via Schiphol and Leiden.
Commuting by train is cheaper with an NS off-peak (daluren) subscription. Use the bike garages at Centraal or Zuid: bikes left outside the racks can be removed.
