Houses for Rent in Hoeksche Waard

Hoeksche Waard is one of the few places in Zuid-Holland where renting a proper family house with a garden, driveway, and extra bedroom doesn't require a Rotterdam salary. The municipality is a large polder island south of Rotterdam, bordered by the Oude Maas and the Haringvliet, made up of dozens of small towns and villages including Oud-Beijerland, Klaaswaal, Westmaas, and Numansdorp. That rural-island character is precisely what makes renting a house here feel fundamentally different from renting in the Randstad cities: you get far more floor space and almost always outdoor space, at a fraction of the cost per square metre.

Based on listings tracked on RentHunter, the house rental market here skews heavily toward long-term, unfurnished family homes. Terraced houses and semi-detached properties dominate the stock, with detached farmhouse-style homes also appearing in the smaller villages. Commuters to Rotterdam account for a significant share of the renters: public transit from the Hoeksche Waard takes around 65 minutes to Rotterdam Centraal, and many households use the car instead, making the area especially practical for families where at least one partner works from home or drives.

The house rental supply in Hoeksche Waard is shaped by the region's village-heavy geography and long-standing owner-occupier culture. Private landlords and small housing associations dominate, and the stock reflects that: most homes are unfurnished, have their own garden, and come with parking on the street or a private driveway.

The vast majority of rental houses in Hoeksche Waard are unfurnished terraced homes built between the 1970s and 1990s, typically with three bedrooms, a rear garden, and off-street parking. This suits families relocating from Rotterdam or Den Haag who already own furniture and want to lock in a stable long-term tenancy. Leases of one to three years are standard, and landlords generally expect proof of income at 3–4× the monthly rent.

In the smaller cores like Westmaas, Mijnsheerenland, and Heinenoord, you occasionally find detached homes or converted rural properties with large plots. These are rarer on the market but offer exceptional space, sometimes with outbuildings or agricultural land attached. Rents at this end of the market are higher, but the price per square metre still undercuts comparable rural properties in, say, the Bollenstreek or Gooi region significantly. These properties are almost always let unfurnished on long leases.

Furnished family houses for rent in Hoeksche Waard are uncommon; the area simply doesn't attract the short-stay expat population that drives furnished supply in cities like Rotterdam or Delft. That said, furnished options do appear occasionally, often from landlords who previously lived in the property themselves. If furnished or luxury finishes are a priority, you'll find a wider selection by looking at luxury houses for rent in Rotterdam as a reference or alternative.

• Oud-Beijerland: the largest center with most services Oud-Beijerland is the de facto capital of Hoeksche Waard, home to the main shopping street, secondary schools, a weekly market on Thursday, and the regional bus hub. Families moving from a larger city tend to feel most at ease here, as it offers the most urban density the island has. Rental houses near the center command slightly higher rents than outlying villages, but you gain walkable access to everyday needs.
• Numansdorp: waterside living on the Haringvliet edge Numansdorp sits on the southern edge of the island, overlooking the Haringvliet estuary, and has a quiet, spacious feel that differs noticeably from the busier northern part of Hoeksche Waard. It's particularly popular with families who value outdoor recreation: the Haringvliet is a UNESCO-recognized wetland area, and kayaking, cycling, and birdwatching are genuine weekend activities here, not just tourist brochure claims. Housing stock includes both post-war terraced homes and newer developments from the 2000s.
• Klaaswaal and Mijnsheerenland: quiet villages with long-term appeal Klaaswaal and Mijnsheerenland are smaller, quieter cores that attract renters who prioritize peace and space over proximity to shops. Both are surrounded by polder farmland and cycling routes, and the communities here are tight-knit; you will know your neighbors. Rental supply is modest in these villages, so listings come up infrequently. When they do, they tend to lease very quickly, often before they appear widely online.
• Strijen: north-island access point closest to the A29 Strijen sits in the northern part of Hoeksche Waard and benefits from direct access to the A29 motorway, making it the most car-commuter-friendly base for reaching Rotterdam or Dordrecht. It has a compact village center, a primary school, and enough local amenities to handle daily life without a trip to Oud-Beijerland. Rental houses here are typically modest family homes from the 1980s and 1990s, and the area is one of the calmer residential choices on the island.

Renting a house in Hoeksche Waard is noticeably more affordable than comparable properties in Rotterdam or Delft. A standard three-bedroom terraced house typically rents in the range of €1,100–€1,500 per month depending on size, condition, and location within the municipality. Properties in Oud-Beijerland tend to sit at the higher end of that range, while houses in smaller villages like Klaaswaal or Westmaas can come in closer to the lower end. For a direct comparison, browsing houses for rent in Rotterdam or houses for rent in Delft quickly illustrates the price gap between Hoeksche Waard and the Randstad core.

Most landlords in Hoeksche Waard are private individuals, which means the rental process can be less standardized than dealing with a professional property management company. Expect to provide payslips for the last three months, a copy of your ID, and sometimes a reference from a previous landlord. The deposit is typically one to two months' rent. Importantly, once you've signed a lease, you are legally required to register at the address with the gemeente Hoeksche Waard, and landlords are permitted to request proof of registration after a few weeks.

One practical note for families with children: school zones in smaller municipalities like Hoeksche Waard are generally assigned by home address, so it's worth checking which primary or secondary school serves your intended street before signing. The weekly Thursday market in Oud-Beijerland is a genuine community anchor and a useful way to get oriented quickly in your first weeks as a new resident.

Hoeksche Waard is an island municipality, which shapes commuting options more than any other factor. There is no train station on the island; public transit relies on buses connecting to ferry crossings or to Dordrecht and Rotterdam via the A29 corridor. Transit times to major cities are:

Rotterdam: ~65 minutes | Den Haag: ~98 minutes | Utrecht: ~106 minutes | Amsterdam: ~116 minutes | Eindhoven: ~149 minutes

For Rotterdam commuters, the journey is manageable by bus but most residents with regular office hours find the car significantly faster and more flexible, especially given that bus frequencies drop sharply in the evenings and on weekends. The Heinenoordtunnel connects the island to the north, and the Haringvlietbrug links the south side to Goeree-Overflakkee and onwards to Zeeland. If your employer is in Rotterdam and you work partly from home, Hoeksche Waard is a realistic base. For daily Utrecht or Amsterdam commutes by public transit, the journey times above should factor heavily into your decision.
