Apartments, rooms and studios for rent in Gooise Meren

Gooise Meren sits in the south-eastern corner of Noord-Holland, stitched together from the old municipalities of Bussum, Muiden, Muiderberg, Naarden, and Weesp. That merger history matters on the rental market: you get five distinct town characters under one municipal label, each with its own street texture and price level. Renters coming from Amsterdam or Utrecht often land here when they want more floor space and a garden without leaving the Noord-Holland province entirely.

The people who rent here tend to fall into a few clear camps: Amsterdam commuters tired of canal-house prices who still want a quick train to the RAI or Amstel, Noord-Holland families looking for a proper house with a backyard on the Naarderstraat side of Naarden, and expats placed by multinationals in the Gooi region who treat Weesp as a halfway point between Schiphol and their office. Browsing RentHunter gives you a live cross-section of what's actually available, which shifts fast in a market this size.

• Houses: the core of the Gooise Meren market Rental houses are the most frequently listed property type across the municipality. In Naarden you'll find mostly post-war terraced houses on streets like Loodijk and around the Turfpoortstraat area; in Bussum the stock skews toward detached and semi-detached homes on the wooded Brinklaan side of town. Weesp adds a smaller layer of canal-adjacent houses near the Herengracht. Houses for rent in Gooise Meren tend to move quickly, particularly anything with a garden and off-street parking.
• Apartments: limited stock, concentrated in Bussum and Weesp Apartment supply is thin compared to the rest of Noord-Holland. Most of what exists sits in low-rise blocks near Bussum Zuid station or in the older canal-front buildings in Weesp's historic centre. If you specifically need an apartment rather than a house, apartments in Gooise Meren require patience: there are fewer listings and less turnover than you'd find in nearby Amstelveen or Almere, both of which have a much larger high-rise and mid-rise stock.
• Short-term and expat rentals near Weesp Since Weesp's integration into Amsterdam municipality created new administrative interest in the area, a small but steady stream of furnished short-term rentals has appeared, typically targeting expat relocations and project-based workers. These listings are more expensive per square metre than long-term unfurnished houses, but they come with less paperwork and no need to furnish from scratch. They sit mainly around the old centre of Weesp and along the Amsterdamseweg corridor toward Muiden.

The merger into Gooise Meren kept the individual town identities intact on the ground. Naarden still has its hexagonal fortress walls and weekly market on the Markt square on Saturdays. Bussum functions as the administrative and commercial core, with the Brinklaan as the main shopping street and a genuine café culture around the Julianaplein. Weesp, since its 2022 absorption into Amsterdam's municipal boundaries (while remaining part of Gooise Meren for statistical purposes), has taken on a slightly different administrative character without losing its canal-town feel.

The Naardermeer nature reserve sits right at the municipality's edge, and a significant number of residents cycle its perimeter trails on weekends. Muiden's small marina keeps a boating community alive on the IJmeer. None of this is marketed heavily; it's just part of how people here spend their time.

Gooise Meren has two NS train stations within the Bussum urban area: Naarden-Bussum and Bussum Zuid. Both sit on the Amsterdam–Amersfoort intercity line, giving direct services toward Amsterdam Amstel and Amsterdam Centraal. Weesp has its own station and is also served by Sprinter and intercity trains running into Amsterdam. When choosing where in the municipality to rent, proximity to one of these three stations is often the deciding factor for commuters.

The Saturday market on Naarden's Markt square is small by Randstad standards but genuinely local: mostly fresh produce, flowers, and a few specialty stalls. Bussum's Brinklaan has a concentration of independent shops and a handful of good brown cafés, which is where most of the social life for the 25–45 age group happens on Friday evenings. For larger grocery runs, the Albert Heijn near Bussum Centrum and the Jumbo on Huizerweg cover most needs. There's no large-scale shopping centre in the municipality, which shapes the retail character toward local commerce.

Gooise Meren's position on the Amsterdam–Amersfoort rail corridor makes it genuinely well-connected for a municipality of its size. Three train stations (Weesp, Naarden-Bussum, Bussum Zuid) cover most of the inhabited area, though Muiden and Muiderberg remain car-dependent for daily commuting. The A1 and A6 motorways pass close to the municipality's borders, making car commutes toward Amsterdam and Almere predictably congested during peak hours.

The most-used commute route. Intercity trains from Naarden-Bussum reach Amsterdam Amstel in around 22 minutes; Weesp station is even faster into Amsterdam. For anyone working in Zuidas, the Zuid–WTC stop adds a few minutes via tram or metro at Amstel. The trade-off: renting in Gooise Meren and commuting to Amsterdam typically saves on rent but adds transit costs and time. On off-peak (dal-uren) tickets, the return journey from Naarden-Bussum to Amsterdam Centraal costs around €6 single.

Utrecht is reachable but the journey is noticeably longer: typically one change, often at Amsterdam Amstel or a direct Sprinter taking the scenic Naarden–Hilversum–Amersfoort–Utrecht route. For daily Utrecht commuters, Gooise Meren is a stretch; most people making this trip find that renting closer to Utrecht or in a city like Hilversum (on the same line) makes more sense for the long term.
