Krimpenerwaard: Zuid-Holland's quiet commuter base
Krimpenerwaard sits quietly in Zuid-Holland's green belt, a municipality that most renters discover through word-of-mouth rather than active searching. This former polder region, formed from merged villages along the Hollandse IJssel, draws tenants who want space and calm within reach of Rotterdam's job market. The rental stock reflects this suburban character: family houses dominate, with some apartments clustered around the newer developments near Bergambacht station.
Most people rent here because they work elsewhere. The train to Rotterdam Central takes about 55 minutes, making Krimpenerwaard a viable base for commuters who prioritize garden space over urban convenience. Check RentHunter to compare what's available, but expect a slower pace than the Randstad's main rental hubs.
Rental stock: houses first, apartments second
- Family houses (primary stock)Most rental properties in Krimpenerwaard are detached or semi-detached houses with gardens, built during the suburban expansion of the 1970s and 1980s. These houses in Krimpenerwaard typically offer 3-4 bedrooms and rent for €1,400-€1,800 per month. The Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel area has the newest stock, while Lekkerkerk offers more traditional polder houses with larger plots.
- Apartments (limited but growing)Apartment options cluster around Bergambacht station and the newer residential developments near Krimpen aan den IJssel. Most apartments in Krimpenerwaard are 2-3 room units renting for €1,100-€1,400 monthly. The stock is newer than the family houses, often featuring modern amenities like balconies and underground parking, but availability remains limited compared to neighboring cities.
- Rooms (very limited market)Room rentals are uncommon in Krimpenerwaard's family-oriented market. When available, rooms in Krimpenerwaard typically appear in shared family houses, renting for €500-€700 monthly including utilities. Most room seekers find better options in nearby Rotterdam or Delft where student and young professional markets support more diverse shared housing.
Living in the green polder landscape
Krimpenerwaard offers a distinctly different lifestyle from the urban Randstad, centered around space, nature, and community connections along the Hollandse IJssel.
Village centers and weekly markets
Each former village maintains its own character and weekly rhythm. Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel has the most services, with a Saturday market on Dorpsplein and several supermarkets along Dijkzigt. Lekkerkerk centers around its historic church and offers quieter residential streets lined with traditional polder houses. Bergambacht serves as the transport hub with good train connections but fewer amenities than the other centers.
Nature access along the IJssel
The Hollandse IJssel runs through Krimpenerwaard's heart, offering walking and cycling paths that connect all three main settlements. The Krimpenerwaard Nature Area provides extensive hiking trails through typical polder landscape with grazing cattle and historic windmills. Weekend cyclists often follow the IJssel route toward Gouda or south toward Kinderdijk's famous windmill complex, making this area popular with recreational visitors from Rotterdam and Utrecht.
Local transport tip:
Many residents bike to Bergambacht station rather than driving. The station has good bike parking facilities, and cycling through the polder landscape is pleasant year-round. The 15-minute ride from Nieuwerkerk saves on parking fees and connects you to the broader rail network efficiently.
Commuting from Krimpenerwaard
Most Krimpenerwaard residents work elsewhere, making transport connections a primary housing decision factor. Bergambacht station anchors the area's rail access to the broader Randstad.
Rotterdam (55 minutes)
The direct train from Bergambacht to Rotterdam Central runs twice hourly, taking about 55 minutes. This connection makes Krimpenerwaard viable for workers in Rotterdam's port, finance, and logistics sectors. Morning peak trains can be crowded, but the journey offers countryside views and typically guarantees a seat for the longer commute.
Den Haag (67 minutes)
Reaching Den Haag requires a transfer in Gouda, extending the commute to about 67 minutes total. This connection serves government workers and professionals in the administrative capital, though the double transfer makes it less convenient than other Randstad destinations. The route via Gouda offers good connection reliability during regular hours.
Off-peak travel advantage:
Consider NS Dal Voordeel (off-peak discount) if you have flexible work hours. The 40% discount on train travel outside peak hours can significantly reduce commuting costs from Krimpenerwaard, making the longer distances more economical than living closer to expensive city centers.
FAQ
Is parking included with rental properties in Krimpenerwaard?
Most family houses come with private driveways or garages, as space isn't constrained like in urban areas. Apartments near stations may have designated parking spots. Always confirm parking arrangements before signing, especially if you plan to commute by car to areas with expensive parking.
How competitive is the rental market in Krimpenerwaard?
Less competitive than major Randstad cities, but good properties still move quickly. Family houses in prime locations near nature areas or with excellent train access can receive multiple applications within days. The smaller market means fewer options overall, so act decisively when you find a suitable property.
What should I know about internet connectivity in Krimpenerwaard?
Fiber optic coverage is generally good in residential areas, with most homes having access to high-speed internet through major providers like KPN and Ziggo. Some rural edges may have slower DSL connections. Check coverage maps before committing if you work remotely or need guaranteed high speeds for your profession.
Are there schools if I have children?
Each village center has primary schools, with additional options in neighboring municipalities. Secondary education typically requires travel to Gouda, Alphen aan den Rijn, or other regional centers. The family-oriented character of Krimpenerwaard means schools are generally well-integrated into community life, though choice may be more limited than in larger cities.
