Houses for Rent in Lelystad

Lelystad offers something unusual in the Dutch housing market: space. This youngest Dutch city, built on reclaimed land in Flevoland, was designed with cars and families in mind. Based on over 400 house listings tracked on RentHunter, the average rent sits at €1,935 per month with an average surface area of 121 m², significantly more space than cramped Amsterdam or Utrecht properties.

What makes Lelystad's house market particularly attractive is the suburban character combined with affordable pricing. At 10% cheaper than neighboring Almere, you get more bang for your buck here. About 61% of house listings include a garden, and 47% come with parking, luxuries that are rare and expensive in older Dutch cities. The city's grid-like layout and wide streets make it genuinely car-friendly, a refreshing change from canal-side parking struggles elsewhere.

For families and professionals seeking space without the Amsterdam price tag, Lelystad presents a compelling option. The train connection to Amsterdam takes around 40 minutes, making it feasible to live here while working in the capital. With 79% of listings allowing registration and a growing expat community (8% of listings target international tenants), the city is becoming an increasingly practical choice for those prioritizing space and value over urban buzz.

Lelystad's housing stock reflects its planned city origins. Most properties are family houses built from the 1980s onward, designed around the Dutch preference for light-filled spaces and practical layouts. Whether you need a furnished move-in ready home or prefer to bring your own furniture, the city offers options to match different lifestyles and budgets.

About 28% of house listings in Lelystad come furnished, typically targeting expats and temporary residents. Furnished houses command a premium but offer the convenience of immediate move-in. The remaining 72% are unfurnished, giving you freedom to create your own space. For families planning a long-term stay, unfurnished options usually offer better value and larger properties. If you need flexible housing arrangements, consider browsing apartments in Lelystad which tend to have higher furnished rates.

A standout feature of Lelystad's housing market is outdoor space: 61% of house listings include a garden, compared to just 10% offering balconies. Most are terraced houses with modest back gardens perfect for children, barbecues, or vegetable plots. Detached houses with larger gardens exist but command premium prices. The abundance of green space reflects Lelystad's suburban character and appeal to families seeking room to breathe outside the Randstad's density.
