Houses for Rent in Ridderkerk

A house for rent in Ridderkerk costs on average 18% less than in Rotterdam, where a rental house averages €2,592 a month. That gap is the whole story of this market: Ridderkerk sits on the island of IJsselmonde in Zuid-Holland, right against Rotterdam's south-eastern edge, and families move here for a house with a garden that would cost far more across the municipal border. Compare the houses listed today on RentHunter.

Supply is thin. A family house on the free rental market comes up only now and then in Ridderkerk, so the families who find one are the ones who reply on the first day. A home for rent with three bedrooms and a back garden goes to the tenant whose documents are ready.

There is no railway station in Ridderkerk. Buses connect the town to Rotterdam's metro and train network, and the A15 and A16 motorways meet here. By public transport, Den Haag is about 74 minutes away door to door and Utrecht about 95.

Ridderkerk is more than its centre: the municipality takes in Bolnes and Slikkerveer along the river and the village of Rijsoord. Where you look decides how you commute and how green your street is. Barendrecht, the next town on IJsselmonde, has a similar market: keep the houses for rent in Barendrecht in the same search.

Bolnes is the western part of Ridderkerk, on the Nieuwe Maas where the municipality meets Rotterdam's IJsselmonde district. For a family with one parent working in Rotterdam it is the most practical choice: the city border is a few minutes away by bike or car, and the A16 is close by. Expect more traffic noise near the motorway, so visit at rush hour before you sign.

Slikkerveer lies on the river side of Ridderkerk, and from the dike you look across the water towards Kinderdijk, the UNESCO-listed windmill site. Houses here suit families who want walks and cycling along the river on the doorstep. The trade-off is distance: Rotterdam is further than from Bolnes, so check the bus stop and the drive to the A16 or A15.

Rijsoord is a village in the south of the municipality, with a quieter, more rural feel than the rest of Ridderkerk. A house here often means a larger plot and open land nearby, which suits families with a dog or children who play outside. Rental houses come up rarely, so set an alert and keep a car in your plans for daily trips.

Houses in Ridderkerk rent for 18% less than in Rotterdam, where the average rental house costs €2,592 a month. For a family that needs three bedrooms and a garden, that saving is the reason to look across the border. Capelle aan den IJssel, east of Rotterdam, is the other suburb families compare: see the houses for rent in Capelle aan den IJssel.

With few houses on the market, preparation wins. Have a passport, an employment contract, recent payslips and an employer's statement ready as PDF, and expect a landlord to check that your gross household income is around three times the rent. The deposit may not exceed two months of base rent for leases signed since 1 July 2023, and since 1 July 2024 a lease is open-ended by default, with fixed terms only in exceptions such as student and youth contracts.

After you sign, register with the gemeente Ridderkerk within 5 days of moving: by appointment for a first registration from abroad, online with DigiD for a move within the Netherlands. Ask the landlord before signing whether registration at the address is allowed, because you need it for school places, a GP and benefits.

Den Haag is about 74 minutes door to door: a bus into Rotterdam, then the train. It works for parents with a job at a ministry or an international organisation who want a family house at Ridderkerk prices, especially with one or two days of working from home.

Utrecht takes about 95 minutes by public transit, which is long for a daily commute but workable two or three days a week. By car the route runs via the A15 or A16 out of Ridderkerk, so compare both before you choose between a house in Bolnes and one in Rijsoord.

Eindhoven is about 134 minutes away and Amsterdam about 135 minutes by public transit. Neither is a daily commute from a rental house in Ridderkerk, but both work for a weekly office day or a hybrid contract.
