Apartments, rooms and studios for rent in Hollands Kroon

Hollands Kroon is not a single town but a municipality of roughly 47,600 people spread across a wide polder landscape in the northern tip of Noord-Holland. It was formed in 2012 when four former municipalities, Anna Paulowna, Niedorp, Wieringen, and Wieringermeer, merged into one. That history matters for renters: the housing stock is scattered across a dozen small cores, from Anna Paulowna in the south to Hippolytushoef on the former island of Wieringen. There is no single center, no main square where everything converges. Choosing where to live means choosing which village suits your daily routine.

People who end up renting here typically work in agricultural or logistics businesses in the region, have roots in one of the local communities, or are drawn by the space and quiet that is simply unavailable at the prices you would pay closer to Amsterdam. The rental market is small and not particularly fast-moving, but listings do appear. RentHunter tracks availability across platforms so you can follow the market without checking multiple sites by hand.

• Houses: the dominant rental format here Imagine finishing a shift at one of the greenhouse complexes near Slootdorp, cycling back along a straight polder road, and arriving at a terraced house with a small garden. That is a realistic picture of everyday life for many renters in Hollands Kroon. Detached and terraced houses make up the majority of the rental stock, particularly in the larger cores like Anna Paulowna, Middenmeer, and Wieringerwerf. Space per euro is the main draw: you get more floor area than you would in a city apartment at a comparable rent.
• Apartments: limited but present in Anna Paulowna Apartment-style units do exist in Hollands Kroon, though in smaller numbers than in more urbanized municipalities. Anna Paulowna, as the administrative center of the municipality, has the highest concentration of multi-unit residential buildings. These tend to be modest in size, suited to one or two occupants, and are particularly interesting for people who want the convenience of a ground-floor or first-floor flat without managing a full house. Expect the rental supply to be thin at any given moment, so act quickly when something suitable appears.
• Rooms and studios: scarce, mostly near local services Single rooms and studio-type units are the least common rental format in Hollands Kroon. The municipality has no university campus driving a student kamermarkt, so demand from that segment is low and supply follows suit. When rooms do appear, they tend to be in Anna Paulowna or Wieringerwerf, close to supermarkets and public transport links. If your budget requires this type of accommodation and nothing is available locally, neighboring cities like Alkmaar and Purmerend have far more active studio and room markets.

Life in Hollands Kroon runs on a quieter clock than most of Noord-Holland. The municipality stretches across the Wieringermeer polder, one of the largest reclaimed land areas in the Netherlands, and the landscape is defined by straight roads, wide skies, and flat agricultural fields. Residents tend to be rooted here: many families have lived in the same core for generations, and the social fabric is tighter than in anonymous commuter suburbs.

The everyday infrastructure is functional rather than abundant. Each of the main cores has at least one supermarket, a general practitioner, and a primary school. For larger shopping, cinema, or specialist services, most residents head to Alkmaar or, less frequently, Den Helder.

Hollands Kroon sits at the northern edge of Noord-Holland, which means commuting to major employment centers requires a genuine time commitment. By car, Anna Paulowna to Alkmaar takes around 30–35 minutes on the N9; Alkmaar itself has a busy regional economy with retail, healthcare, and logistics employers. Reaching Amsterdam by car runs 60–75 minutes depending on traffic around the A7 and the ring. Public transport links are limited: the nearest train stations are in Den Helder (northward) and Anna Paulowna has a direct bus line to Schagen, where you connect to the regional rail.

If your employer is in Amsterdam or the Zaanstad corridor, living in Hollands Kroon is a deliberate trade-off: more living space and lower rent against a longer daily commute. Many households manage it with one car commuter and one partner working locally or remotely.

Imagine cycling from a house near the Dorpsstraat in Middenmeer on a Saturday morning, passing the open fields where tulip bulbs were recently harvested, and reaching the weekly market in Anna Paulowna. That Saturday rhythm is genuine in Hollands Kroon. Local markets in the main cores sell fresh produce directly from regional growers, which is one of the concrete everyday advantages of living in an agricultural municipality rather than an urban center.

The Wieringermeer polder itself is a remarkable living environment: the long straight roads and windbreaks of poplars create a distinctive flat-landscape aesthetic that appeals to cyclists and people who work outdoors. The former island of Wieringen, with its slightly elevated terrain around Hippolytushoef and Den Oever, offers views across the IJsselmeer that you simply do not get anywhere closer to Amsterdam.
