Krimpen Aan Den Ijssel: the Rotterdam commuter refuge
Krimpen Aan Den Ijssel functions as Rotterdam's affordable bedroom community. Most renters here work in the Randstad but want more space for their money—you'll get 21% more rental value compared to Rotterdam proper. The town sits along the Hollandse IJssel river, giving it a quieter, more residential feel than the urban sprawl just 30 minutes away.
The rental market reflects this commuter reality. Houses dominate the stock, appealing to families and professionals who've outgrown city apartments. Based on listings tracked through RentHunter, expect a market where local residents compete with Rotterdam refugees seeking better value. September and January see the most turnover as people adjust their living situations around work changes.
What's available in Krimpen's rental stock
- Family housesThe bulk of Krimpen's rental market consists of terraced houses and semi-detached properties. These typically offer 3-4 bedrooms with gardens, appealing to families relocating from cramped Rotterdam apartments. Expect prices that still deliver significant savings compared to equivalent space in the city.
- Apartments near the centerSmaller apartment buildings cluster around the Kerkstraat area and near Krimpen Aan Den IJssel train station. These units serve young professionals who want the commuter convenience but aren't ready for family-sized housing. Supply is more limited than houses, making them competitive when they do become available.
- Rooms for students and startersLimited room rentals exist, mostly in converted family homes or shared arrangements. These serve students commuting to Rotterdam universities or young workers starting their careers. The inventory stays small since most property owners prefer single-family tenants over shared living situations.
Living in Krimpen: small-town pace, big-city access
Krimpen operates as a genuine small town where neighbors still know each other. The weekday rhythm revolves around the morning and evening commuter rush, but weekends belong to local life—Saturday markets on Kerkstraat, cycling along the IJssel, and family gatherings in private gardens.
Rotterdam connection (30 minutes)
The train from Krimpen Aan Den IJssel station gets you to Rotterdam Centraal in about 30 minutes during peak hours. Most residents who work in Rotterdam appreciate this direct connection, though the limited service frequency means planning around the timetable. The morning 7:30-8:30 window sees the heaviest commuter traffic.
Weekend life along the IJssel
The river defines local recreation. Walking and cycling paths follow the IJssel north toward Ouderkerk and south toward the Alblasserwaard region. Saturday mornings bring a modest market on Kerkstraat where locals buy fresh produce and catch up on neighborhood news. The riverside cafés like those near the old bridge become weekend gathering spots for families.
Parking reality check:
Most rental properties include parking, but double-check before signing. Street parking near the train station fills up with commuters from other towns who drive here to catch the Rotterdam train. If your rental lacks a designated spot, factor in a 5-minute walk from available street parking to the station.
Commuting from Krimpen Aan Den IJssel
Transport connections define life here. The town serves primarily as a bedroom community for Randstad workers, so understanding your commute options shapes rental decisions.
Rotterdam (30 minutes)
Direct train service to Rotterdam Centraal takes about 30 minutes, making this the primary work destination for Krimpen residents. The line runs frequently during peak hours but has gaps during midday and evenings. Most people working in Rotterdam find the trade-off worthwhile for the space and quiet they get at home.
Den Haag via Gouda (48 minutes)
Getting to Den Haag requires a connection through Gouda, extending the journey to about 48 minutes total. This route works for government workers or those in international organizations, though the extra transfer makes it less convenient than Rotterdam. Some residents use this connection to access Delft as well, adding another 10-15 minutes.
NS subscriptions for daily commuters:
A monthly NS subscription (around €100-150 depending on your route) pays for itself if you commute 4+ days per week. The Dal Voordeel subscription gives 40% discounts during off-peak hours, useful for weekend trips or flexible work arrangements. Buy your subscription online to avoid station queues during the morning rush.
FAQ
How much cheaper is Krimpen compared to Rotterdam?
Rentals in Krimpen run about 21% cheaper than Rotterdam on average. This translates to meaningful savings—a 3-bedroom house that might cost €1,800 in Rotterdam could rent for around €1,400 in Krimpen. The trade-off is the 30-minute commute and smaller town amenities, but many families find the space and savings worth it.
Is parking included with most rentals?
Most family houses come with dedicated parking spots, either a driveway or garage. Apartment buildings usually include assigned parking spaces as well. However, always verify this before signing—some older conversions near the center might rely on street parking, which can get competitive during commuter hours when people from neighboring towns drive here to catch the train.
What's the rental market like for young professionals?
Young professionals typically choose Krimpen when they're ready to leave shared housing but aren't quite ready for family-sized homes. The apartment stock is limited compared to houses, so expect some competition for 1-2 bedroom units near the train station. Many singles and couples use Krimpen as a stepping stone—living here for 2-3 years while building savings before moving closer to their work or upgrading to larger spaces.
