Houses for Rent in Maashorst

Renting a house in Maashorst is a fundamentally different experience from renting in a Dutch city centre. This municipality, formed in 2022 from the merger of Landerd and Uden, sits in the green heart of Noord-Brabant, bordered by the Maashorst nature reserve. Most rental houses here are detached or semi-detached family homes with private gardens and driveways, the kind of space that simply doesn't exist at the same price point in Eindhoven or Nijmegen. Based on listings tracked on RentHunter, the supply leans heavily toward long-term unfurnished rentals, reflecting a market driven by families and established professionals rather than short-stay expats.

What makes Maashorst stand out for house hunters is the combination of genuine green space and Noord-Brabant's characteristic sense of community. The nature reserve itself stretches across thousands of hectares of forest and heath, meaning your backyard effectively extends into one of the largest nature areas in the southern Netherlands. Evenings here can genuinely mean a walk among red deer through the Maashorst bos, not just a stroll through a city park. For families comparing a house to rent in Maashorst against options in busier urban centres, the lifestyle difference is stark.

The rental house market in Maashorst offers more variety in dwelling type than in most Dutch cities of comparable size. Understanding what's available helps you narrow your search before viewing.

The overwhelming majority of rental houses in Maashorst are unfurnished, often described in Dutch listings as 'kaal' (bare) or 'gestoffeerd' (carpeted/basic fixtures). These are typically three- to five-bedroom homes aimed at families settling in for the long term. Expect to bring your own kitchen, flooring, and window treatments. In exchange, landlords generally offer competitive rents and multi-year lease terms, which gives families the stability to actually put down roots. A significant share of rental houses in Maashorst come with a private garden, often both front and back, plus off-street parking. This is what draws families with children away from apartment life in larger Noord-Brabant cities. Semi-detached homes ('twee-onder-een-kap') tend to offer larger plots than terraced houses ('rijtjeswoningen'), and fully detached homes in quieter villages like Schaijk or Reek can come with substantial outdoor space. If you want premium space and upscale finishes, luxury houses in Nijmegen offer a useful benchmark for what higher-end rental homes in the region look like.

• Uden: largest centre, most rental supply Uden is the urban heart of Maashorst and where the bulk of rental houses are listed. It has a compact shopping centre around the Markt, several primary and secondary schools, and good bus connections toward Oss and Veghel. Families who want to cycle to a supermarket or drop children at school without a car will find Uden the most practical base within the municipality.
• Schaijk: village quiet near the forest edge Schaijk sits directly adjacent to the Maashorst nature reserve and is the village of choice for tenants who prioritise outdoor life above urban convenience. Rental houses here tend to be older, detached or semi-detached homes with generous plots. The village has a local primary school and a few shops, but for larger errands you will need a car or bike ride to Uden. It appeals strongly to couples and families who want morning runs through forest paths as part of their daily routine.
• Zeeland & Reek: small-scale suburban family living The former Landerd villages of Zeeland and Reek offer a quieter alternative to Uden-centre living, with a stronger sense of small-community identity. Streets here are lined with terraced and semi-detached homes built mostly in the 1970s–1990s, with neat front gardens and a pace of life that genuinely slows you down. Both villages have basic amenities and primary schools. Rental supply here is thinner than Uden, but when homes do become available they often represent strong value for families who work by car toward Nijmegen or 's-Hertogenbosch.
• Volkel: quiet residential living near the airbase perimeter Volkel is known across the region for Vliegbasis Volkel, the Dutch air force base whose jets are occasionally audible overhead. The surrounding residential streets are quiet and genuinely affordable, and some military families are housed here. For civilian renters, the appeal is straightforward: spacious houses at lower rents than in Uden, with the Maashorst forests a short bike ride away. It suits practical renters unbothered by the occasional aircraft.

Rental houses in Maashorst are priced significantly below comparable homes in the Randstad or even in Eindhoven. A standard three-bedroom terraced family home in Uden typically falls in the €1,000–€1,400/month range unfurnished, while larger semi-detached or detached homes in quieter villages can go higher depending on size and plot. The Noord-Brabant rental market is generally less competitive than in Amsterdam or Utrecht, but quality homes in Maashorst still move quickly once listed, particularly during late spring and early autumn.

For the rental process, expect landlords to request two to three months of payslips, a copy of your employment contract, and a security deposit of one to two months' rent. Self-employed applicants ('ZZP'ers') often face more scrutiny and may need to show an accountant's statement. Registering at the gemeente Maashorst (formerly separate Landerd and Uden registrations, now unified) is obligatory within five days of moving in, and your landlord's cooperation is needed for this. Most private landlords in the area are aware of this requirement and cooperate routinely.

One practical note for newcomers to Noord-Brabant: the region runs on car culture more than most Dutch provinces. While Uden has cycling infrastructure and local buses, commuting to work in Eindhoven, Nijmegen, or 's-Hertogenbosch without a car is genuinely difficult. Budget for a car or factor in the cost and time of public transit connections. To browse all current rentals in Maashorst across property types, RentHunter aggregates listings from the major Dutch platforms in one place.

Maashorst has no railway station of its own, which shapes the commuting reality for anyone renting here. The nearest train connections are at Oss or Veghel, reachable by bus or bike. From those stations, you can reach Eindhoven in roughly 57 minutes by public transit, making it the most practical commute destination. Utrecht takes around 96 minutes, and Amsterdam around 119 minutes each by public transit, both feasible for occasional trips but not ideal for daily commuters without a car.

For most residents, driving is the default. The A50 motorway runs nearby and connects Maashorst quickly to both Eindhoven (south) and Nijmegen (east), making both cities practical for daily commuters. Rotterdam is around 132 minutes by public transit and Den Haag around 149 minutes, putting them firmly in the occasional-visit category rather than daily commutes. Groningen is around 174 minutes by public transit from Maashorst. If you are commuting to Nijmegen regularly, it is worth comparing houses for rent in Nijmegen to see whether the cost saving in Maashorst justifies the travel time.
