Frequently asked questions
Is Oegstgeest more expensive than nearby cities?
Yes, Oegstgeest runs about 14% more expensive than Leiden at €1,894 average rent versus €1,601. The premium reflects the suburban setting, better parking availability, and family-oriented housing stock. However, it remains more affordable than Amsterdam or central Den Haag for similar property sizes.
What's the parking situation like for renters?
Much better than dense urban areas. 38% of rental properties include dedicated parking spots, and most residential streets offer free parking for residents with permits. The town center requires paid parking during business hours, but residential areas around Lange Voort and near the station provide convenient street parking for guests.
Do I need to speak Dutch to rent in Oegstgeest?
While helpful, it's not always required. Only 10% of listings specifically target expats, but many landlords speak English given the proximity to international organizations in Den Haag. The local housing market is less internationally oriented than Amsterdam or Den Haag center, so basic Dutch knowledge will expand your options significantly.
How competitive is the rental market compared to Leiden?
Less frantic but still competitive. With only 3% of listings targeting students versus Leiden's student-heavy market, viewing schedules tend to be more reasonable. Properties often stay available for days rather than hours, and you won't encounter the hospiteeravond group selection process common in student cities. However, quality family homes still move quickly.
