Houses for Rent in Wijdemeren

Wijdemeren is a municipality in Noord-Holland built around a chain of lakes, the Loosdrechtse Plassen being the most iconic, and that geography shapes its rental house market in ways that set it apart from most Dutch towns. Houses here overwhelmingly come with gardens, private driveways, and genuine space between neighbours, the kind of set-up that's difficult to find once you get closer to Amsterdam. Families and couples leaving the capital frequently end up here when they start needing an extra bedroom and a patch of grass.

Based on listings tracked on RentHunter, the supply of rental houses in Wijdemeren skews toward mid-sized single-family homes in a price range that undercuts comparable properties in nearby Amstelveen considerably. The area sits firmly within Noord-Holland, so the rental market follows Amsterdam's seasonal rhythms: the most listings appear in spring and early autumn, and well-priced homes move quickly. If you're comparing options across the region, houses in Amstelveen are a useful benchmark for price and commute trade-offs.

Public transit from Wijdemeren to Amsterdam takes around 120 minutes, which means most residents drive or cycle to a nearby station. That commute profile means the rental market here caters strongly to people who value home and surroundings over a short office commute, particularly families putting roots down in Noord-Holland.

The rental house stock in Wijdemeren is dominated by free-standing and semi-detached single-family homes, most of which were built between the 1960s and 1990s. Row houses (rijtjeshuizen) also appear regularly, particularly in the village cores of Loosdrecht and Nieuw-Loosdrecht. Larger detached homes with boat storage or jetty access do come onto the market occasionally near the Plassen, though these command a premium.

The vast majority of rental houses in Wijdemeren are let unfurnished or with only basic floor coverings and window treatments. Most come with a private garden, usually front and back, plus a garage or at least a driveway for one or two cars. This suits families or couples moving from another property who already own furniture and want to settle in for the long term. Tenants can typically negotiate small improvements like painting or additional storage, as landlords here tend to be private owners rather than large agencies.

Furnished rental houses in Wijdemeren are uncommon. When they do appear, they typically target expats or professionals on short-term assignments near the Amsterdam metropolitan area, and the asking rent reflects that premium. If you need a furnished house in the broader region, furnished houses in Utrecht often offer a wider selection and comparable access to major employment hubs. Short-term contracts in Wijdemeren itself are rare; most landlords prefer a minimum lease of 12 months.

• Loosdrecht: waterfront living, higher rents Loosdrecht is the most sought-after village in the municipality, directly on the famous Loosdrechtse Plassen. Rental houses here often come with garden access to a canal or lake, and in summer the area fills with sailing boats and kayakers. Rents command a premium because of the waterside lifestyle. Families looking for space and quiet, but still within a reasonable drive of the A2 motorway, make up most of the renter demand.
• Nieuw-Loosdrecht: family suburbia on the water's edge Just east of Loosdrecht, Nieuw-Loosdrecht is where you find the most consistent supply of family rental houses, mostly post-war terraced and semi-detached homes on quiet residential streets. Schools and basic amenities are within cycling distance, and the proximity to the Plassen means children grow up swimming and sailing from an early age. Rents tend to be slightly lower than in the main Loosdrecht village, making it a popular first choice for families relocating from Amsterdam or Hilversum.
• Kortenhoef: polder village, more affordable, car-dependent Kortenhoef sits in the western part of the municipality, surrounded by typical Noord-Holland polder landscape. The village has a quiet, rural feel and rental houses here tend to be more affordable than in Loosdrecht. The trade-off is that public transit links are limited, so a car is essentially required. Local highlights include the Kortenhoef recreational area and cycling paths along the polders. A good fit for tenants who work locally or are willing to drive to the Hilversum or Bussum train stations.
• Ankeveen: smallest village, few rentals, high demand Ankeveen is the smallest of the Wijdemeren villages and rental properties here rarely come onto the market. When they do, competition is fierce because the village is almost entirely surrounded by water and nature reserve, giving it an unusually secluded feel for a location just 30 kilometres from Amsterdam. Long-term residents rarely leave, so if you spot a rental house in Ankeveen, move quickly.

Rental houses in Wijdemeren typically range from around €1,400/month for a modest terraced house in Kortenhoef or Nieuw-Loosdrecht to upwards of €2,200/month for a detached house with water access in Loosdrecht. Mid-sized semi-detached homes in good condition generally land somewhere between €1,600 and €1,900/month. These prices are noticeably more competitive than equivalent properties in Amstelveen, while still offering significantly more living space than you'd get at the same price point in Amsterdam itself. Utility costs in older Noord-Holland homes can be substantial in winter, so always ask for the energy label before signing.

The rental process in Wijdemeren follows standard Dutch practice: expect to provide recent pay slips, a copy of your ID, and proof of income typically at least three times the monthly rent. Because most landlords here are private individuals, the process can be slightly more personal than dealing with a large property management company, which also means there's more room for conversation about lease terms. Register with the gemeente Wijdemeren after moving in; this is legally required and also necessary for practical things like getting a Dutch driving licence or accessing municipal services.
