Apartments and flats for Rent in Meierijstad

Meierijstad is a municipality in Noord-Brabant formed in 2017 by merging Schijndel, Sint-Oedenrode, and Veghel. What makes renting a flat here different from renting in a major Dutch city is the scale: this is a polycentric municipality without a single dominant urban core, which means apartment listings are spread across several town centers rather than concentrated in one downtown neighborhood. Rents are noticeably lower than in Eindhoven or Den Bosch, and the competition for a good apartment to rent is considerably less fierce.

Based on listings tracked on RentHunter, apartments in Meierijstad represent a relatively compact segment of the local rental market, where houses and family homes dominate. That makes flats here a niche find: when a good apartment does come up, it tends to be snapped up quickly. The typical renter profile skews toward working professionals commuting to Eindhoven (around 25 minutes by public transit) or employees based at one of the logistics and food-industry companies that have long anchored the Veghel area.

Living in Meierijstad means trading urban density for space, quiet, and genuine Noord-Brabant character. The trade-off is real but deliberate for many renters who have tried city living and now want something different.

Apartment rents in Meierijstad fall meaningfully below what the same flat would cost in Eindhoven or Tilburg. For professionals working remotely or commuting to the Eindhoven tech corridor a few days a week, the savings add up fast. The municipality's dispersed structure also means you're rarely paying a premium for a central address, because the concept of 'the center' is itself distributed across Veghel, Schijndel, and Sint-Oedenrode.

The Dommelland nature reserve and the Aa river valley run through the municipality, offering cycling and hiking routes that most urban renters would only access on a weekend trip. The weekly market in Veghel and the Schijndel carnival (one of Noord-Brabant's most enthusiastically celebrated) are the kind of community anchors that give a place a sense of belonging. Families and couples renting apartments here often cite the immediate access to green space as the deciding factor.

Noord-Brabant has a distinct regional identity that sets it apart from the more Calvinist north of the Netherlands. The Burgundian lifestyle, strong Catholic traditions, and relaxed sociability that Brabanders are known for are visible in everyday life here. Local cafés in Veghel's Markt and Sint-Oedenrode's historic center fill up on weekday evenings in a way you rarely see in commuter suburbs further north. For expats arriving from Southern Europe or Latin America, this warmth is often the first thing they mention.

Because Meierijstad is a merged municipality, 'where to live' is really three separate questions: do you want Veghel, Schijndel, or Sint-Oedenrode? Each has a different character and a different apartment stock.

Veghel is the most urban part of Meierijstad and where the majority of apartment listings appear. The area around the Markt and along the Eem river has the highest concentration of flats, mostly in modest mid-century blocks and some newer developments built since the 2010s. The town has good bus links toward the Eindhoven direction and a small but functional commercial center with supermarkets, a library, and a weekly market on the square. Expats working in the local food industry (the area around Veghel has historically been a hub for large food manufacturers) often prefer this town for its self-contained feel.

Schijndel sits slightly west of Veghel and has a more compact, village-like center built around its Sint-Servatiuskerk and the main market square. Apartments here are fewer in number but the area rewards renters looking for a quieter pace. The town is well-known in Noord-Brabant for its enthusiastic carnival tradition, which gives the community a strong social identity year-round. For couples or small families wanting more space for less money than Eindhoven, Schijndel is worth considering alongside houses in Meierijstad if budget allows a comparison.

Sint-Oedenrode has the most scenic historic center of the three main towns, with the Dommel river running through it and a well-preserved old town center. Rental apartments are genuinely scarce here; the housing stock skews heavily toward owner-occupied family homes. When flats do appear, they tend to go to working couples or small households who prize the quiet and the green surroundings over urban convenience. The weekly market on Dinsdag (Tuesday) is a local institution worth knowing about.

• Eindhoven (~25 min by bus) The most important connection for Meierijstad renters. Eindhoven is the economic hub of the region, home to ASML, Philips, and the broader tech and design ecosystem around the High Tech Campus and Dutch Design Week. If you work in Eindhoven but prefer lower rents, renting a flat in Meierijstad is a common trade-off. Browse apartments in Eindhoven to compare directly.
• Utrecht (~82 min by public transit) Reachable but not practical for daily commuting. Utrecht is around 97 km away and requires transit via Eindhoven or 's-Hertogenbosch. A viable option for occasional office days rather than a daily commute.
• Rotterdam and Amsterdam (~100–106 min) Rotterdam is around 101 minutes away, Amsterdam around 106 minutes by public transit. Both are within reach for hybrid workers who need to be in the Randstad once or twice a week. Those commutes are best handled by car to Eindhoven first, then intercity train onward.

1. Search across all platforms at once
Because apartment supply in Meierijstad is limited, you cannot afford to check only one platform. Use RentHunter to compare listings from multiple Dutch rental platforms simultaneously. Set up alerts for new listings in Meierijstad so you can react within hours, not days. The market here is thin enough that a good flat can disappear before you even see it.
2. View quickly and come prepared
Viewings in smaller municipalities like Meierijstad are usually scheduled quickly, often within a day or two of contacting the landlord or agent. Come to the viewing ready to ask practical questions: heating type, energy label, included services, parking, and whether pets are accepted. If you have a dog or cat, ask specifically about pet-friendly apartments in Eindhoven as an alternative if Meierijstad supply is too limited.
3. Prepare your rental documents in advance
Dutch landlords and agencies typically require: a valid ID or passport, your three most recent payslips, an employer statement (werkgeversverklaring), and sometimes a bank statement. If you are self-employed, substitute payslips with your last two years of tax returns (belastingaangifte) and an accountant's statement. Expats on a Dutch work permit should have their visa and residence permit documentation ready. Having a complete dossier ready in digital form means you can submit same-day after a viewing.
4. Sign the lease and pay the deposit
Most leases in the Netherlands are for an indefinite period or a fixed two-year term. Read the contract carefully: note the notice period (usually one to three months), any maintenance responsibilities, and the clause on annual rent indexation. The deposit is typically one or two months' rent. In Meierijstad, where landlords are often private individuals rather than large agencies, negotiations on furnishing or small improvements can sometimes be more flexible than in a big city.
5. Register at the gemeente Meierijstad
Within five days of moving in, you are legally required to register your address at the Basisregistratie Personen (BRP) at the gemeentehuis. The main municipal service point for Meierijstad is in Veghel (Stadhuisplein). Registration is mandatory for all residents, including EU citizens and expats. You will need your rental contract, ID, and for non-EU nationals your residence permit. Registration unlocks your DigiD application, which you need for nearly all Dutch government services.
